This Lecture is being organized by the Indian Society of Soil Science to commemorate its foundation in 1934 and its founder - Professor J.N. Mukherjee, a doyen of Colloid and Soil Sciences, known internationally. The lecture was first instituted in 1983 as a part of felicitations to Professor J.N. Mukherjee on the eve of his 90th birthday celebration (on April 23, 1983). Unfortunately, after a few days, on May 10, 1983, the members of the Society had to mourn his demise. A short life sketch of this reputed scientist and his achievements can be seen in an earlier issue of this Journal (J. Indian Soc. Soil Sci. Vol. 31, pp 350-358, year 1983), while a brief account of the birth, growth and achievements of the Society is available in another publication of the Society (Souvenir, pp 26-35), which was released during the Diamond Jubilee Celebration of the Society on 28th November, 1994.

Most appropriately, the privilege and honour of delivering the First Lecture in this series went to another internationally known Soil Scientist, Dr. S.P. Raychaudhuri - one of the brilliant students of Professor Mukherjee (J. Indian Soc. Soil Sci. Vol. 31, pp 359-363, year 1983). The subsequent lectures in this series were delivered by Prof. L.N. Mandal (1984), Dr. G.S. Sekhon (1985), Dr. K.V. Raman (1986), Dr. N. Panda (1987), Dr. S. Patnaik (1988), Dr. N.T. Singh (1989), Dr. I.P. Abrol (1990), Dr. S.B. This is for the information of the Readers that all the Prof. J.N. Mukherjee-ISSS Foundation lectures delivered up to year 2002 have been published as the ISSS Bulletin No. 21.

This Memorial Lecture was instituted in 1973 by the Indian Society of Soil Science out of a donation received from Dr. Tamhane Memorial Committee in memory of Dr. R.V. Tamhane who passed away on January 23, 1973.

After a short period of service in the Department of Agriculture of the erstwhile Bombay Province, Dr. Tamhane joined the IARI, New Delhi in 1945  as Assistant Soil Survey Officer; in 1958, he became the Head of the Division of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry; in 1961, he joined the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Government of India as Advisor  (Soil Conservation) and held that position until his retirement in 1970. Soon after, he was invited by the Reserve Bank of India to take over the responsibilities of the Director (Technical), Agricultural Refinance Corporation at its Bombay (now Mumbai) office.

His main scientific contributions have been in the field of soil survey, soil genesis, soil conservation and soil testing. The credit for organizing the Soil Testing Service and a chain of  Soil Testing Laboratories in different states of the country goes to him. On several occasions, he was assigned important responsibilities of representing India at national and international conferences.

Dr. Tamhane had a very long association with the Indian Society of Soil Science starting as a Member, Joint Secretary and finally as the President. Whosoever had occasion to come in contact with him, whatever be his walk of life would remember his sweet, straight-forward and cordial nature. All his colleagues found in him the qualities of an able administrator and  a true sportsman in every sense.

Since 1974, Dr. R.V. Tamhane Memorial Lecture is being delivered annually by an eminent scientist on any topic in Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry. This is for the information of the Readers that all the Dr. R.V. Tamhane memorial lectures delivered up to year 2002 have been published as the ISSS Bulletin No. 20.

Dedicated to the memory of Dr. S.P. Raychaudhuri, one of the stalwarts among the Soil Scientists of this country during the 20th century, this lecture is arranged annually by the Indian Society of Soil Science through one of its Chapters spread all over the country. The institution of this lecture is facilitated by a donation of Rs. 30,000 made over to this Society by the Dr. S.P. Raychaudhuri Memorial Fund Committee for this purpose. Appropriately enough during 1990 the first lecture in this series was organized on 23rd April, the birthday of  Dr. Raychaudhuri, by the Delhi Chapter of ISSS at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi; the institution with which he was associated, both officially as well as informally, for about four decades. The honour of delivering the first lecture went to Dr. N.S. Randhawa. The subsequent lectures in this series were delivered by Dr. B.P. Ghildyal (1991), Dr. J.S.P. Yadav (1992), Dr. N. Sethunathan (1993), Dr. R.L. Narasimham (1994), Dr. N. Panda (1995), Dr. A. Sankaram (1996), Dr. J.S. Kanwar (1997), Dr. B.R. Tripathi (1998), Dr. N.N. Goswami (1999), Dr. M. Singaram (2007) and Dr. Anil Kumar Singh (2008). To this Society, arranging this series of lecture is a source of inspiration, for thereby it not only pays its respects to a doyen among the Soil Scientists but also to one who besides being a Founder Member of this Society virtually resurrected it in 1952 when it was on the verge of collapse and started the publication of the Journal of the Society, notwithstanding the precarious financial position of the Society prevailing then. For a biographical sketch of Dr. Satya Prasad Raychaudhuri, readers can refer to the Journal of  the Indian Society of Soil Science, Vol. 38, pp 366-372 (1990).

This series of lectures, dedicated to the memory of late Dr. D.P. Motiramani, is organized annually by the Indian Society of Soil Science (ISSS), through one of the Chapters of the Society. Motiramani Memorial Committee in 1993 was deposited with the ISSS and income accruing out of this corpus is used to organize this series of lectures. A short biographical sketch of Dr. D.P. Motiramani was printed in the Journal of the Indian Society of Soil Science (1995), Vol. 43, page 535. The distinction of delivering the first lecture in 1994 went to Dr. J.S. Kanwar.
